Universal Basic Income

Getting political again…so beware!

In these modern times, automation and computerization have the capacity to, let’s be frank, decimate many “human” jobs.  I’ve noted before my strong belief that automated vehicles will become the norm in the next few years and that some children living today may never have to learn to drive because it will be unnecessary.

As pleasant as the idea of having a self-driving vehicle is, there is of course a negative downside: Suddenly all jobs involving driving vehicles are in jeopardy.

All of them.

If/when self-driving technology becomes a reality, consider all the changes that will inevitably follow.  For one, I can envision large cities having a fleet of self-driving public use vehicles that anybody can summon and pay for, for much less than a taxi, with an app on their phone.  The vehicle comes to pick you up, takes you to where you want to go, then you’re there doing your thing and when you’re done, you whip out your cellphone and call a driverless car to come pick you up and take you back home.

Now consider who is affected by this.

First, taxi drivers.  Public transport drivers.  Car salesmen/dealerships.  Car companies.  Insurance companies.  Gas/chargin stations.  Mechanics.

Why the last three?

Because if you have an efficient fleet of self-driving cars, you don’t need to have a car yourself.  If you don’t need to have a car, there is less and less need for car dealerships and the employees within.  Also, car companies may downsize to make these public car fleets which, of course, will affect mechanics (no need to take in a car you don’t own to a repair shop), and gas/charging stations (you won’t be needing to do anything with these public cars…that will be taken care of by the fleet operations).  Finally, there is no need for you to bother with a car insurance as, duh, you have no car.

Needless to say, I’ve pointed out a rather HUGE number of jobs people currently have which may, in a matter of a single generation, go away.

Worse, this is but one of the things which may well change thanks to computerization and modern technology.

Which brings us to the topic headlined above: Universal Basic Incomes.

The idea being that people receive a “basic” income which will allow them to live outside of poverty.  This income will, hopefully, allow people impacted by modern technology to be able to live outside of complete poverty.

There are certainly positives to implementing programs like this, some of which are listed here:

Universal Basic Income Pilot Programs

There are, of course, negatives as well.  The idea of “giving” people money, even if it is out of the most basic decency to not allow people to starve, is unnerving to many who espouse capitalistic ideology.

In some ways it lies at the heart of the critiques of communism.  If everyone “shares” all the rewards for communal work, then what’s the incentive to make innovative products?  Indeed, what’s the incentive to do anything great at all?

On the other hand and as mentioned above, there are reasons, especially with today’s job sapping technologies, to consider this more than perhaps it was done before.

After all, do we really want to have a small group of “haves” and a very large group of people who, through no fault of their own, can no longer find a way to support themselves given their skill levels?

It’s a knotty question and I don’t have an answer to it.  However, as an author whose books are primarily in the science fiction field, this intrigues the hell out of me and makes me wonder where our future lies.

Fascinating stuff.

Better to laugh than cry…

Gettin’ political again, so for those who are faint of heart, look away!

To the rest: So yesterday Kellyanne Conway, President (wow that’s hard to write) Trump’s campaign adviser was interviewed by Chris Matthews and said the following (the clip I’m including does a good job at pointing out the *ahem* inaccuracies in her statement)…

To quote Ms. Conway: “Masterminds behind the Bowling Green massacre”.

Which, of course, set off a hilarious twitter reaction, many of the responses which can be found here:

Kellyane Conway literally fabricated a massacre to Justify Trump’s Immigration Ban

To all the twitter writers posted in the above article, my hats off to you.  You’re creative, ingenious, and, especially, hilarious.

It’s so hard to point out any one twitter reaction as the best of the lot so you’ll have to trust me: They’ll all worth checking out.

Do so, now!  That’s an order, son!

Amid all the depressing news…

…there appears stories like this one, found on CNN.com and written by Andreas Preuss, involving a WWII airplane restoration, and…mystery!

WWII-Era Plane Mystery: Who Are Eva and Edith?

I don’t want to ruin the whole story (you really should click the link and read it), but the I suppose I will:

When a P-47 Thunderbolt in the process of being restored was disassembled, the signatures of two women, Eva and Edith, was found written in a grease pencil inside the airplane’s wing.  Likely these signatures were from two of the women who worked on the airplane when it was first assembled back in 1944 in the plant in Indiana where the aircraft was known to have been built.

The signature "Eva & Edith" was found inside the wing of P-47D Thunderbolt at Evansville, Indiana, aviation plant.

There’s not much more to the story than that.

And yet its a wonderful story, in my opinion, as well as a beautiful link to our past.  72 years ago these two women, whom the people behind the restoration hope to eventually identify, likely worked at the Indiana plant where this aircraft was originally put together and signed their names on a part of the plane which, very likely, would never have been seen by anyone…that is, until the restoration process was initiated.

Who exactly were Eva and Edith?  Did they have a pleasant life following the war?  Did they live to a rip old age and get to see the world change around them…and could they still be alive?

One wonders…and hopes for the very best for these two ladies who, in their way, helped the war effort.

Interesting…if grim…news

Found this via a link (I actively avoid Fox “News” therefore the only way I found out about this article was by this secondary link):

2 Days after death, some life continues in body

It’s soooo tempting to make a joke about a certain new administration’s head and…

Nah.

Interesting stuff, nonetheless.

Alternative Facts…

A few days back (Sunday, to be exact), Presidential Aide (I don’t know if she has any other formal title) Kellyanne Conway, while on Meet the Press and while being asked about, well, see for yourself:

And thus a line I’m certain Ms. Conway would desperately love to take back, “Alternative Facts”, was born and much ridicule was to be had with her Orwellian use of language.

Speaking of which:

1984 Skyrockets on Amazon.com after “Alternative Facts” Controversy

Frankly, I don’t know what to make of Ms. Conway.  Maybe I’m projecting my own feelings upon her but, at least to me, she seems like a fairly smart person yet there’s something so terribly, so clearly …wrong… inside her.

Perhaps she’s like a lawyer who’s assigned to defend a client they know is guilty as hell and a terrible person, to boot, yet value their job to the point where they will provide as strong a defense as possible.  Perhaps I’m over-simplifying it, but it’s their job, not them.

Yet note the first things that come out of Ms. Conway’s mouth in the above extended clip, how she threatens the press right off the bat.

The ridicule heaped upon her and the administration for the things she said in the above interview, especially the “Alternative Facts” quote,  is well deserved, again IMHO, yet I can’t help but feel a great unease.  Are these people for real?  Just how far are they willing to go to argue their view of reality, which, of course, simply isn’t?

Unlike the ridicule coming from the internet, George Orwell’s 1984 was far from a “comedy”.  At its core it was a truly terrifying horror story.  The idea of a dictatorial government taking total control of its citizens and, effectively, making them sheep should terrify everyone, and the idea they can create their own reality and force their people to accept it is perhaps the most frightening idea of them all.

Up is down.  Black is white.  Fighting for peace…

Alternative facts, indeed.

We’re not even a week into this new presidency.  What exactly are we in for?

About yesterday’s inauguration…

As many have noted, the crowds during Mr. Trump’s inauguration were significantly …less… than expected by the “big” man.  He proclaimed beforehand the crowds at his event would break records (they did, I suppose, though not the way he expected).

This is a popular comparison picture…

And considering many of the crowds that did bother to come were protest crowds, then things look even more dire, attendance-wise for the Trumpster.

As for the protest crowds, Slate magazine offered some of what they considered the more amusing protest signs…

The Best Protest Signs for the Inauguration of Donald Trump

They were clever, funny, and sad…all at the same time.  Among my SFW favorites…

img_4719_1024

Then there was this: White Nationalist Richard Spencer showed up at the inauguration and…

Sigh.

Look, I really don’t condone violence in any way, shape, or form and while one is tempted to applaud the fact that this man, who ultimately espouses hate, gets “what’s coming to him”, I can’t help but worry if this is a sign of things to come…and worry even more if we’re starting down a too-dangerous path here.

The blame, ultimately, comes right back to Mr. Trump.  During the campaign he played fast and loose with some dangerous statements and personalities while engaging in all to obvious verbal “dog whistles”.  While he was incredibly quick in recent days to condemn Representative (and Civil Rights Icon) John Lewis for publicly calling his presidency “Illegitimate”, try to find as strong a rejection of some of the white nationalists that have tried to cozy up to him.

It’s going to be a long four years…if the Trumpster makes it that far.

Hello darkness…

So today, January 20th, 2017 we here in the good ol’ US of A inaugurate our latest president and we enter a new era full of optimism and hope that…

Who the f#$k am I kidding?

When George W. Bush was elected president following Bill Clinton, I feared the worst and it proved to be the case.  Not only did George W. Bush not get the popular vote, but there is still a legitimate, IMHO, case to be made he didn’t win Florida either.  It was the meddling of the Supreme Court, most specifically the conservative judges, who bent over backwards to give Mr. Bush his presidency.

Granted he won re-election but this too was a close shave and I know there are those (perhaps a little less legitimately) who suspect there was some hanky-panky going on in Ohio which gave him the edge over John Kerry (personally, I feel Bush the younger benefited mightily from shenanigans the first time around and a weak candidate in Al Gore and benefited from a weak candidate in Mr. Kerry the second go around).

Regardless, by the time Bush the younger’s terms were done, even the most steadfast Republican couldn’t even mention Mr. Bush’s name in any way, shape or form, lest they hurt negatives.

When Mr. Obama came into office, the country was a mess and, despite incredible odds, considering how much “help” he was afforded by the Republican side, he managed to clean up much of Mr. Bush’s mess.  I do not believe Mr. Obama was a perfect president, but at least he was smart and tried to do the right thing despite the wall of opposition he constantly faced.

Today we inaugurate a person that, incredibly, actually makes me long for Mr. Bush.

In Mr. Trump’s presidency, I fear we’re about to enter another period of great harm.  Even if we were to ignore the racist, misogynistic, narcissistic, and just plain stupid things Mr. Trump say, his cabinet picks are, for the most part, a damn unpleasant joke.

In his picks we have a who’s who of individuals who either have conflicts of interest (some very major), a history of sketchy financial dealings, or are idiots.  Rick Perry, the nominee for Secretary of Energy, admitted he didn’t know what the Department of Energy was about.  Every time Ben Carson opens his mouth, I wonder if his resume (he is supposedly one of the better neurosurgeons) was invented whole cloth…or if he’s one of those idiot-savants who knows one thing really well.  Then there’s Betsy DeVos, a woman who was nominated to be head of the Department of Education for no other reason than that her family is very wealthy and has contributed mightily to the Republican party (she’s also the one who felt guns should be allowed in schools because, I kid you not, they may be needed to repel grizzly bears).

It’s a complete shit-show and not only will the United States be dealing with this, sadly so too will the rest of the world.

I started this post with a famous movie quote and I’ll end it with another.

I’ll try to be optimistic.  I’ll hope Mr. Trump surprises everyone and turns out to be not as bugnuts crazy as he seems.   And if he is, I hope the darkness he creates is quickly followed by light.

As if 2017 weren’t nerve wracking enough already…

Really scary news found on the Telegraph and written by David Lawler concerning…

U.S. woman killed by superbug resistant to every available anti-biotic

Though not directly related, I’m reminded of Newton’s famous third law of motion: For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

In the case of anti-biotics, they have saved countless lives and helped the sick get well.  Unfortunately, their broad usage has had unintended side effects.  Using another famous scientist’s ideas, Charles Darwin’s in this case, it would appear when you create anti-biotics to kill “bugs”, you also, perhaps inevitably, leave behind the bugs most resistant to these anti-biotics.  Thus the bugs survive via a form of natural selection.  While we kill all the bugs we can, those that survive are more and more resistant to the drugs used against them and the big fear is that they will not only live on, but multiply.

The only good thing to be gleaned about the above report is the following:

According to the CDC, “pan-resistant” bacteria are very uncommon, and “infection control contact precautions” are important in such situations, meaning patients will be isolated.

A different superbug was found in at least four patients in the US last year. It was found to be resistant even to colistin, considered the last resort among antibiotics because of its harmful side effects.

Fortunately that bug, known as mcr-1, was not found to be highly contagious.

So these highly resistant bugs are uncommon and, it appears so far, not highly contagious.

The big concern is: What if that changes?

And you thought having a President Trump was your biggest concern.

It ain’t sexy…

…but I really enjoy checking out recommended products presented in the various websites under what used to be Gawker.  Personally, I tend to check out i09.com or Gizmodo.com or Deadspin.com (a sports related website) but, as stated, they often check out/review products available on the internet and offer their recommendations…especially when said products are on sale.

Over at lifehacker.com (another of their websites), they offer a year end review of the products they’ve recommended and which ones sold the best…

The 16 Most Popular Products of 2016, as purchased by you

While the vast majority of the products listed I did not buy, there is one I would heartily offer an endorsement to, one that I didn’t even consider until seeing the review on one of those sites above and being intrigued if the product is as good as the reviewers stated.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the Delta 75152 Shower Head:

Again, we’re not talking about “sexy” new products or anything, but seeing this shower head and hearing what it does intrigued me.  If there’s one thing I like when showering it is a strong stream of water and the reviews stated this shower head offered a great stream.

So I ordered the Delta 75152 when it was on sale (I believe it was on sale for something like $17.  Its normal price is a little north of $20), got it, installed it (you can do this with your own two hands), and…wow.

At first I thought “Well, its an improvement but not really that big a deal” but as I used it more and more I realized: This is one hell of a shower head.  I wound up liking it so much I ordered a second and installed it in the guest bathroom!

So, again, we’re off the beaten path for things I usually discuss here but if you’re looking for a new shower head, one that delivers water in a strong, steady stream, check out the Delta.

You won’t be disappointed.

Tunnel Tree no more…

The Pioneer Cabin Tree, a giant sequoia in Calaveras Big Trees State Park, is one of the more fascinating things you could find in a state park.

Sadly, past tense.

Here’s some very old photographs of it, the first from before she was fully hollowed out in the 1880’s…

Here’s another, different century…

And finally, a more recent shot…

Well, as I stated above, the tree is no more.  Recent bad weather caused the tree to finally fall (article is by Hudson Hongo and found on gizmodo.com)…

After more than 100 years, California’s iconic Tunnel Tree is no more
