The latest big news…

Yeah, lots of news going on and haven’t been ’round these parts for a while now.

I suppose the two biggest issues of this day are the continued fighting in the Ukraine against Russia. It’s a horrible situation initiated by a lunatic who seemed to think he could just waltz into Ukraine with his mighty army and everyone would simply give up when faced with their overwhelming might.

The reality, if it weren’t for all the lives lost and cities destroyed, would be the stuff of bitter comedy. The Russian forces have been exposed as under-trained, ignorant of what they are doing (not their fault), and brutal (very much their fault). The fact that Ukraine looks to be about to go on the offensive and is only miles from the Russian border is yet another element that almost makes you want to laugh at the ineptness of the Russian forces… but again, only if we were to ignore the rapes, murders, general war crimes, and savagery this war has created.

Oh, and you gotta love how some Russian media is mulling the use of nuclear weapons as a potentially legitimate thing going forward.

Way to make a bad situation all the worse, eh?

Speaking of which, the leak a few days ago about Supreme Court Judge Alito’s Roe v Wade ruling, effectively gutting it, has also sent out shock waves across the country.

I suppose we once again have one of those “if it weren’t so fucking terrible it would be a comedy” type situations. Love this short video, presented on twitter, from The Daily Show

The Daily Show on Twitter: “These judges make lying fun. It’s the Black Robe Comedy Tour!

Serious shit, truthfully, yet also hilarious because it’s so fucking true as well.

Alito and his ilk, as so clearly presented above, lied their way into their Supreme Court “jobs” and now are in hiding because of the furor of this ruling, something they claimed beforehand to “respect”.

I’ve noticed that some of the more right wing elements out there, for instance, the truck drivers who were creating blockades in Washington DC, were perplexed when people shouted at them and gave them the middle finger.

“How can you be against us when we’re trying to free you?” I recall one such demonstrator stated.

It’s a delusion, truly. A feeling that you know what’s right and everyone else is going to go your way, even though you clearly don’t know what’s right and a majority of people are very much against your actions and ideas.

The anti-choice crowd doesn’t get that but let’s see what happens in the upcoming elections. Their hubris might yet be their undoing.

One hopes.

Finally, there’s the Johnny Depp versus Amber Heard trial.

For those living in a cave, Johnny Depp’s career has really sunk in recent years, partially because he’s been in a string of absolute stinker films and because, he claims in this lawsuit, of an editorial Amber Heard wrote which talked about -without mentioning Johnny Depp by name- being in an abusive relationship.

I can’t seem to wave a dead cat around the internet without smacking into Johnny Depp fanatics who are livid about Amber Heard and demand “justice” for Johnny and damnation for her.

And… I can’t understand it.

I’m not a Amber Heard “fan”. I’m not a Johnny Depp “fan”. I’ve seen a few of the things presented in trail so far and Johnny Depp, IMHO, strikes me as a deeply vindictive man who is trying his absolute best to destroy another person, that being Amber Heard.

His career, from what I’ve read and seen, was already very much on the rocks BEFORE that 2018 editorial came out which he claims so defamed him so already I’m wondering what this whole lawsuit is about.

There were plenty of stories about him allegedly being out of control on movie sets, of allegedly consuming mass quantities of alcohol and drugs and often supposedly arriving late to work without any idea of his lines or what he was even supposed to do. Interestingly, in the trail at one point he was asked about the movies he was recently in (perhaps to get at this point I just mentioned) and he replied he had no idea of the films he had just done and couldn’t name any recent works.

Weird.

A trail in England brought by him and against a newspaper over reports of him being abusive resulted in a very clear loss for Depp and a finding by the court that he was indeed abusive and therefore the paper he was suing had not defamed him by stating this.

I can’t help but think when all is said here in this trial, we’re going to see much the same result.

Is Amber Heard a “good” person? I truly don’t know. There is some evidence, I have read, for at least one pretty gross thing she is supposed to have done on his bed… but as gross as that is, is it abusive? Depp himself, of the stand, stated that he couldn’t help but “laugh” at that.

So… ok?

Depp claims she cut/slashed his finger, but there are contemporaneous tweets and interviews where Depp himself says he did it to himself. Was he lying then and isn’t now or is he lying now and wasn’t then? What are we supposed to believe in that case?

There are those who say both of them engaged in abusive acts and its certainly possible, but I wasn’t there nor were many of them so its kinda engaging in speculation, no?

One probably should let the trail work itself out and each side present their evidence and what happens will happen, whether Depp be vindicated or not.

Having said that, one thing I already feel works very much against Depp I’ve already mentioned above: The idea that Heard’s 2018 op-ed somehow was solely responsible for his career nosedive and not the many bad movie choices he made from roughly 2012’s Dark Shadows on.

I mean, not counting that film, these are some of the major movies he has been in since 2013:

The Lone Ranger (2013, a pretty big box office flop), Transcendence (2014 another box office flop), Into the Woods (2014 ditto), Mortdecai (2015, does anyone remember this one?), Black Mass (2015), Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016), Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them (2016… I suppose this one was a success, but was it in the league of the Harry Potter films in terms of box office? Also, if memory serves, he only appeared at the very end of this film in exactly one scene, no?), Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017, a definite box office success but also the film where many of the stories of his alleged bad behavior on set and the need to use stand ins to get things done originated. Again, this movie was released a full year before Heard’s editorial), Murder on the Orient Express (2017, I suspect this film did well but it was a very big ensemble cast and Depp’s role was pretty small, though pivotal, as he was the murder victim), and, going into 2018, we had such minor fare as Sherlock Gnomes (a cgi animated film that I doubt many remember now), The Professor (has some decent reviews but does anyone remember this one?), and the more well-known Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (this is his last foray into the J.K. Rowling series as by this point he was indeed being viewed as toxic).

Anyway, a lesser actor may well have fallen far more quickly based on the string of unsuccessful works he was in along with the reputation -whether true or not- he had developed.

Either way, it’s in the news and a source of curiosity, certainly, if nothing much more.

Ho boy… politics and news

Nowadays and in the political sphere, things come at you fast and furious.

Yesterday, for example, Donald Trump called in to Fox and Friends and ranted and raved to such an extent that over on Reddit, they posted this amusing graphic showing the Trump-lover hosts before and nearing the end of the interview:

The actual full phone call/interview, if you dare!

If you’re curious for even more stuff, there are plenty of comments and takes on this off the rails phone call/interview.  You can read it over here:

Before and after your call to the President

A comment by Ryepodz at that link noted the following regarding the video:

At 13:43 you can hear a producer or staff in the background saying “oh god…” At 13:55 he says “jesus christ…”

Wading through all the crap Trump said, one of the things that really hurt him was stating that Attorney Michael Cohen barely did anything for him and, further, he admitted for the first time that Cohen handled the Stormy Daniels affair, comments which not two hours later was presented to the judge handling the Michael Cohen case as evidence that the documents seized from him were not subject to the attorney/client confidentiality provisions.

Man, talk about shooting yourself in the… foot.

If you want still more information about this, check out this article by Chris Cillizza over at CNN.com where he encapsulates…

The 53 most stunning lines from Donald Trump’s Fox and Friends interview

But that’s not all!

The second bit of big news is that actor/comedian Bill Cosby was found guilty of sexual assault against Andrea Constand.  Ms. Constand was quite literally the last person who could bring Mr. Cosby to justice as the many, many women who have subsequently come out and given testimony eerily similar regarding Mr. Cosby’s actions (ie, drugging then sexually assaulting them) had already passed the time limits for prosecution.

Mr. Cosby was supposedly unemotional when the guilty verdict was read but he had an outburst following the verdict and when talk turned to revoking his bail.  In arguing to revoke his bail, Prosecutors stated he had an airplane and might use it to flee.  At that point Mr. Cosby blurted out: “He doesn’t have a plane, asshole.”

Yes, Mr. Cosby referred to himself in the third person.

One can only guess that the gravity of his predicament finally came into focus at that point.

Anyway, if you want to read more about that, here’s an article about the trail by Eric Levenson and presented on CNN.com:

The long, winding path to Bill Cosby’s guilty verdict

But wait, there’s still more!

As if all that wasn’t enough, later in the afternoon came this stunning news, which you can read in the article by Joshua Berlinger, Nick Thompson, and Euan McKirdy and presented on the below link:

North and South Korea leaders hold historic summit and pledge to end Korean War

Wow… just… wow.

It wasn’t all that long ago that the very real fear a potential nuclear war might occur because of the actions of North Korean leader Kim.  His provocative missile “tests”, his nuclear ambitions…

So what exactly happened?

I suspect a few things, and one of them is this: Donald Trump.

There’s an old cliche that goes like this: Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

Mr. Trump’s instability and outrageous threats leveled at Kim, I suspect, unnerved him.  Previous U.S. Presidents, Kim knew, wouldn’t risk a nuclear war and, perhaps, that emboldened him to push his luck with them.

But because Trump is so out there, he might (and, I repeat, might) have finally gotten worried that he was facing someone as crazy as he was projecting himself out to be and, therefore, the risk of a war was suddenly far higher.

Note, there are certainly other factors.  Leader Kim went to China, which suggested the mighty country might have finally decided to reign him in.  There is also talk that his latest nuclear tests might have collapsed the entire research facilities he had in the mountains for them.

Regardless, these factors -and, yes, including Donald freaking Trump- I believe played into the stunning news presented yesterday.

Will Kim continue down this path?

For the sake of the world, one hopes so.

Two bits of news…

Let’s start with the weird news…

Woman Drives Around With 15 Foot Tree Stuck in Her Car’s Grille Like It’s NBD

If this story proves anything at all, it is that when you’re driving drunk you’re capable of some pretty seriously stupid things.  Check out these pictures of the stop and be amazed at the size of the tree (not just 15 feet tall, but also quite wide!)…

and,,,

Here’s the video of her actually being stopped…

Wow.

Alright, getting serious now:

Erin Andrews Awarded $55 Million in Peeping Tom Lawsuit

For those who don’t know who Erin Andrews is, she was (at that time) an ESPN reporter who, while in a Marriott Hotel in Nashville, was stalked by a man named Michael Barrett who eventually filmed her nude while in her room.  Mr. Barrett allegedly got Ms. Andrews’ room number from the Hotel (I don’t know the details of how this was accomplished) then rented the room beside hers.  When Ms. Andrews was out of the room, Mr. Barrett altered her room’s peephole so that when she was in the room he could put his phone’s camera on it and film her while she thought she was alone and in the privacy of her room.

This voyeur film was subsequently posted on the internet and is still out there for anyone to see.  Mr. Barrett was eventually arrested and served 30 months in jail for stalking.

Ms. Andrews pursued a civil lawsuit against both Mr. Barrett and the Marriott Hotel for $75 million and, as the article above notes, the jury awarded her $55 million.  The judgment was that her stalker was 51% culpable in the filming while the Hotel was 49% culpable.  Thus, Mr. Barrett owes Ms. Andrews $28 million while the Marriott Hotel owes her $26 million.

And I couldn’t disagree with at least part of the judgment more.

Now, before you start sending death threats and curses my way, let me state the following:

What was done to Ms. Andrews was unforgivable and her stalker is a lowlife scum.  Frankly, he should have served much more time in jail than he did and I totally agree with the monetary judgment in the civil suit rendered against him.  Had this happened to my daughter, I might well be the one in jail…for killing the bastard for what he did.

Having said all that, I don’t get why the Marriott Hotel was found culpable in this civil suit…at least to the degree it was.

Please understand, I’m not defending the Hotel for what it did during the trial.  Frankly, I think the Hotel’s defense attorney did the Hotel no favors when it implied Ms. Andrews’ career was boosted by this invasion of her privacy.  Worse still was the news that the Hotel owner was caught with a group of friends watching the Erin Andrews footage while eating out.  Jeeze Louize…how stupid -and creepy- can you be?!

Further, I would grant you that  someone at the Hotel exercised poor judgment in telling Ms. Andrews’ stalker her room number (if indeed this happened…I read somewhere that Mr. Barrett used a clever deception involving caller ID to get that information but I could be wrong).  I’m also unclear as to how Mr. Barrett wound up getting the room next to Ms. Andrews.  If he simply walked up to the reception and asked for room X when he checked in and they gave the room to him, how was the Hotel to know he wanted this room for the purpose of spying on her?

So I return to my original point: Why was the Marriott Hotel found so culpable in an act committed by someone else?

Let’s assume the worst: The clerk at the Hotel was stupid enough to tell a complete stranger which room Ms. Andrews was in.  Not only is doing this stupid, it is also dangerous.  Imagine if Mr. Barrett was mentally deranged and sexually attacked and/or killed Ms. Andrews!

As grim as that thought is, telling someone who is staying in a room is stupid and potentially dangerous BUT it is not against the law.

Further, let’s assume this theoretical Hotel Clerk was, after telling this man Ms. Andrews’ room number, even stupider still and was asked if the room beside Ms. Andrews was available and our stupid, stupid clerk rented it to the stalker.

Again, we’re talking some really stupid actions but again, they are nothing more than that.  There is no reason our stupid clerk would think Mr. Barrett is some kind of deranged stalker.  There is no reason to believe s/he knew what Mr. Barrett was up to.  Indeed, I can’t recall reading any story like this, where a stalker figures out the room of a celebrity and subsequently films them through the peephole, happening before.

So how was the Marriott Hotel -the enterprise versus the clerk(s) who gave Mr. Barrett this information- to know this was the stalker’s intention?  And, truly, are they then 49% liable for his actions?  Mr. Barrett has no affiliation with the Hotel and they most certainly stood to gain absolutely nothing -and now have lost $26 million- from what HE did.

To repeat: The actions of Mr. Barrett were not only criminal, but they were also disgusting, invasive, and he absolutely should be made to pay for them.  I feel for Ms. Andrews and hate what she went through.

But I just can’t see the Hotel being culpable -at least to that degree- for the actions of this sick, pathetic individual.

Wow…

…Israel invading Gaza, the taking down of the Malaysian airliner and loss of all aboard, Microsoft cutting 18,000 jobs…

A trifecta of absolutely terrible news.  It was like the world threw up on itself (though I could think of more colorful metaphors) yesterday.

Here’s hoping today isn’t quite so grim.
